5 tips to keep toys organised

Do you feel like your house is overrun with toys? In these moments, we often think more storage is the answer, but in truth, the solution is fewer toys.

How?

You are the gatekeeper to your home

Recognise that everything that comes into our homes needs to be organised, cleaned and managed. It is up to us, as parents and carers, to set the boundaries. We are the gatekeepers to our homes and we can’t expect our children to be tidy and to be comfortable letting things go, if we don’t model those behaviours ourselves.

Edit with your children

Involve your little ones in the editing process, so they can feel in control of their belongings. Group like with like items (cars, dolls, puzzles etc.) and let them choose what they love and wish to keep.

Define limits

Acknowledge the physical boundaries of your space and be clear on where art, games and toys will be stored. Use existing storage to define the limit. For example, if after editing, your cupboard is full of puzzles, then operate a one in, one out policy.

Keep your organisational system simple

Store toys in broad categories in open bins or baskets and label. This makes it easy for children to know where to put things back.

Set up a donation station

This can be as simple as a basket or bag, or you can designate a part of a cupboard or room where donations can be stored until you are able to take them to a charity shop or arrange for someone to collect them.

The result? Fewer toys = less stress and the freedom to play, invent, and create.
